How it works
  1. Total 12 g, minus 0 g of stones and clasps = 12 g of metal.
  2. 12 g x 0.5833 (14k (58.3%)) = 7 g pure gold.
  3. 0.225 troy oz x $4,141.80 = $932.08 before the dealer's cut.

Method

Why buyers pay less than the melt value

Melt value = gold-only weight in grams x karat purity x gold price per gram. It is what the metal is worth.
What you get is a share of that. A buyer has to test the gold, melt or ship it to a refiner, and make a profit. Lustre uses editorial ranges, not quotes: pawn and walk-in shops 50% to 70% of melt, coin and gold dealers 70% to 85%, refiners and mail-in specialists 85% to 95%. Most sellers land between 60% and 90%.
Worth more than melt? Signed designer pieces, antiques, and jewelry with valuable stones can sell for more than the gold alone. Ask a jeweler or appraiser before you scrap them. Plated or filled pieces (GF, GP, HGE) have almost no gold.

Questions

How this calculator works

How much is my gold ring worth?

Weigh it in grams, find the karat stamp (10K, 14K, 18K), multiply the weight by the purity, then by the gold price per gram. The result is melt value. Buyers pay a share of it, typically 60% to 90%.

How much is 14k gold worth per gram?

14k gold is 58.33% pure. Multiply the gold price per gram by 0.5833. The 14k gold price page shows the live number.

Why is the offer lower than the calculator?

The calculator shows melt value, what the gold is worth. A buyer pays less to cover testing, refining and profit. Compare at least two offers.

Is a gold chain or a ring worth more by weight?

The gold is worth the same per gram. Only the karat and the weight matter for scrap, not the style.

How much will I get for gold with stones?

Stones are not counted in scrap gold. Enter the gold-only weight. Diamonds and gemstones can add value, but only a buyer who values stones will pay for them.
