The Indian Head Eagle, in brief
The Indian Head eagle is a $10 gold coin struck from 1907 to 1933 in 90% gold at Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco. Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed it: Liberty in an Indian feather headdress on the front and a standing eagle on the back. Each coin holds 0.48375 troy ounce of gold. This catalogue lists the 29 regular issues of 1907 to 1932 (none were struck in 1917 to 1919, 1921 to 1925, 1927 to 1929 or 1931). The 1933 eagle (312,500 struck, nearly all melted) and the 1907 Rolled Edge, Periods piece are left out.
Most Indian Head eagles trade at gold value plus a small premium. The exceptions are the 1920-S, 1930-S and 1911-D, plus the low-mintage San Francisco and no-motto dates, which are priced as collectibles.
