How gold value by weight is worked out
Weight in grams x purity = grams of pure gold. Divide by 31.1035 for troy ounces, then multiply by the live gold spot price. Karat to purity: 10k = 41.7%, 14k = 58.3%, 18k = 75%, 22k = 91.7%, 24k = 99.9%. Use Other for any purity you know. The dealer range is a Lustre editorial estimate.
How this calculator works
How do I work out what my gold is worth by weight?
Convert the weight to grams, multiply by the purity (14k is 58.33%, 24k is 99.9%), divide by 31.1035 to get troy ounces, then multiply by the gold spot price.
How much is a gram of gold worth?
A gram of pure (24k) gold is the spot price per troy ounce divided by 31.1035. Lower karats are worth proportionally less: multiply by 0.5833 for 14k or 0.75 for 18k. The live gold price is on the gold price page.
Is a troy ounce the same as a regular ounce?
No. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams and a regular (avoirdupois) ounce is 28.35 grams. Gold is priced per troy ounce.
Is this what a buyer will pay?
No. This is the value of the gold at spot. Dealers buy scrap at a share of that value, typically 60% to 90%, and the page shows that range as an editorial estimate, not a quote.
