The American Silver Eagle, in brief
The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States. It has been struck every year since 1986 in one troy ounce of .999 silver with a face value of one dollar. The obverse is Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty from the 1916 half dollar. The reverse, a heraldic eagle by John Mercanti, was replaced in 2021 by Emily Damstra's eagle landing on a branch, known as Type 2. Lustre lists the bullion strikes only, one issue per year, from 1986 to 2024. Proof and burnished uncirculated versions are separate coins and are not included.
A Silver Eagle is worth its silver plus a premium, so its price moves with the silver price. Condition rarely matters for bullion coins. The exceptions are the low-mintage years 1994, 1995 and 1996, and to a lesser degree the first year, 1986, which carry a premium in high Mint State grades.
