The American Gold Eagle is the US Mint's gold bullion coin. A one-ounce coin holds exactly one troy ounce of gold, alloyed with silver and copper so it wears well, which is why the coin weighs 1.0909 oz in total. The coin is guaranteed by the US government for weight and content.

Premium range method. Dealer prices for one item (check or wire payment) read from two dealers on 2026-10-28, divided by melt value and rounded outward. It is a range of what we saw, not a promise. Card payments and small orders cost more; large orders cost less.

Questions

Quick answers

How much is a American Gold Eagle worth?

Its melt value is the pure gold it contains (1 troy ounce) times the live gold spot price, shown at the top of this page. Buying it costs more than melt, and selling it back typically returns 95% to 99% of melt for well-known bullion.

What premium over spot do dealers charge for a American Gold Eagle?

Lustre saw dealers charging about 2% to 6% over melt for one item on 2026-10-28 (single-item prices paid by check or wire, from SD Bullion and Kitco). Premiums change with demand and supply, and are higher for small orders and card payments.

Is a American Gold Eagle priced by the ounce?

Yes. The price follows the gold spot price, plus a premium. The premium pays for making, shipping and the dealer's costs.

Where can I compare American Gold Eagle prices?

The table on this page lists the dealers Lustre checks, with each current price and premium over spot, and a link to the dealer. If a dealer's price cannot be read, the row says "Check price".
