Method

How premium over spot is worked out

Melt = troy ounces of metal x the live spot price. Premium = price - melt. Premium % = premium / melt. Premiums are higher on small items (1 gram, 1/10 oz) and lower on large bars (10 oz, 100 oz, 1 kilo), because minting and handling costs are spread over fewer ounces.

Questions

How this calculator works

What is a premium over spot?

The amount a dealer charges above the metal value. Premium = dealer price - (troy ounces x spot price). It pays for minting, shipping, dealer costs and profit.

What is a normal premium on silver?

It varies by item and by market conditions. Large bars usually carry the lowest premium and 1 oz government coins the highest. See the compare prices pages for what dealers are charging now.

Why is the premium higher on small coins?

Fixed costs of making and handling a coin are spread over fewer ounces, so a 1/10 oz coin has a much higher percent premium than a 10 oz bar.

Do I get the premium back when I sell?

No. Dealers buy back at or below spot for most bullion, so the premium you paid is the cost of buying the item.
