How the melt value is worked out
Each coin type has a standard weight and silver share. A 90% dime weighs 2.5 g, a quarter 6.25 g and a half dollar 12.5 g. A 40% half weighs 11.5 g and a war nickel 5 g at 35%. Pure silver per coin = weight x silver share. Troy ounces = grams / 31.1035, times the live silver price. The dealer range is a Lustre editorial estimate.

How this calculator works
Which US coins are silver?
Dimes and quarters dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver. Half dollars are 90% through 1964 and 40% from 1965 to 1970. Nickels dated 1942 to 1945 are 35% silver. Later dimes, quarters and halves have no silver.
How much silver is in a 1964 quarter?
6.25 grams of 90% silver, which is 5.625 grams (0.1808 troy ounce) of pure silver.
Is a silver coin worth more than melt?
Common dates sell close to melt. Rare dates, mint marks and high grades can sell for much more, so melt value is the floor.
How can I tell if a coin is silver?
Check the date first. A silver dime or quarter has a solid silver edge with no copper stripe, and a clad coin shows a copper-colored stripe.
