How the scrap value is worked out
1. Convert the weight to grams.
2. Multiply by purity: sterling .925, coin silver .900, 800 silver .800, fine silver .999. That is the grams of pure silver.
3. Divide by 31.1035 for troy ounces and multiply by the live silver spot price. That is the melt value.
4. Dealers pay a share of melt. Lustre shows 70% to 90%, an editorial estimate, not a quote. Silver coins and bars sell closer to melt than flatware does.

What is coin silver?
Coin silver is 90% silver, the standard for US silver coins before 1965 and for 19th century silverware marked COIN. Use the junk silver calculator for coins.
How can I tell if it is sterling?
Look for a stamp: STERLING, 925 or .925. Silver plate is only a thin coat and has almost no scrap value.
