The Liberty Head Half Eagle, in brief
The Liberty Head half eagle (also called the Coronet half eagle) is a $5 gold coin struck from 1839 to 1908. Christian Gobrecht designed the coronet Liberty head. This catalogue covers 1880 to 1908, the years with IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse, struck at Philadelphia, San Francisco, Carson City, New Orleans (1892 to 1894) and, in 1906 and 1907, Denver. Each coin is 90% gold, weighs 8.359 g and holds 0.24187 troy ounce, so the melt value is the floor. Earlier dates (1839 to 1879) are not in this catalogue yet, and 1887 Philadelphia is a Proof-only year.
Most Liberty half eagles of the 1880s and 1900s are worth gold plus a small premium. The collectible dates are the low-mintage Philadelphia years (1888 to 1890), the Carson City issues, and the three New Orleans coins of 1892 to 1894.
