Virginia Sales Tax on Gold and Silver

CHECKED 2026-10-28. NOT TAX ADVICE.

No sales tax on bullion

Virginia does not charge sales tax on gold, silver or platinum bullion and legal tender coins, for now.

The exemption is in Va. Code 58.1-609.1(19) and covers gold, silver or platinum bullion and legal tender coins; jewelry and works of art are excluded. The 2026 budget (HB 30, item 3-5.22) says it stays in effect through July 1, 2028, so the earlier June 30, 2026 end date did not happen. The code page itself still shows the older 'effective through June 30, 2025' wording, so the budget text controls until the code is updated. Palladium is not listed.

General state sales tax rate: 4.3%. Va. Code 58.1-609.1(19); exemption extended through July 1, 2028 by 2026 Appropriation Act item 3-5.22 (prior sunset June 30, 2026 from 2025 HB 1600). State rate 4.3% plus 1% local per GoldBroker, not a state page.

Under IRS Form 1099-B instructions, a sale of precious metals in a form and quantity that matches a CFTC-approved futures contract (for example, at least 25 gold coins of a covered type) can require the broker or dealer to report it; a single coin sale does not, and sales to the same customer within 24 hours are added together. irs.gov
