What the payout range means

Melt value is the gold in your item at today’s gold price. No buyer pays all of it. Lustre shows 60% to 90% of melt, an editorial estimate, and splits it three ways:

  • Pawn shops and walk-in cash-for-gold shops are quick but sit near the bottom, about 60% to 70%.
  • Gold dealers and jewelers that buy scrap sit in the middle, about 70% to 85%.
  • Refiners and mail-in buyers sit near the top, about 85% to 90%, and pay more on larger lots.

These ranges are not a promise or a quote. They come from the same table as Lustre’s US pages, and UK buyers set their own rates. Ask each buyer for the price per gram and the share of the gold price before you agree, and compare at least two. More on the buyer types: where to sell gold and silver.

How the value is worked out

  1. Convert the weight to grams: pennyweight × 1.55517, troy ounces × 31.1035.
  2. Multiply by the purity to get grams of pure gold: 9ct .375, 10k .417, 14k .583, 18ct .750, 22ct .917, 24ct .999.
  3. Divide by 31.1035 for troy ounces and multiply by the gold price.
  4. For pounds, the dollar price is converted at the European Central Bank reference rate.

Reading the carat on UK gold

CaratHallmark numberPure gold
9ct37537.5%
10k417 (US karat)41.7%
14k58558.5%
18k75075%
22k91691.6%
24k99999.9%

The table shows the stamp number divided by 1,000. The calculator uses the exact carat fraction (14ct is 14/24 = 58.3%, 22ct is 22/24 = 91.7%), so it can differ from a 585 or 916 stamp by a fraction of a percent. For other marks see the hallmark identifier. The UK gold price per gram is on Gold price in the UK. The US version of this calculator is the scrap gold calculator.

Sources: purity from the standard gold fineness scale; the fineness number as parts per thousand from the Edinburgh Assay Office, which lists the gold marks as 375, 585, 750, 916, 990 and 999; exchange rate from the European Central Bank.

Questions

Quick answers

How do I work out what my scrap gold is worth?

Weigh it in grams, multiply by the purity (9ct is 0.375, 18ct is 0.75), divide by 31.1035 to get troy ounces of pure gold, then multiply by the gold price per troy ounce. That is the melt value. A buyer pays a share of it.

How much will a buyer pay for scrap gold?

Lustre uses 60% to 90% of melt value as the range. Pawn shops sit near 60% to 70%, gold dealers near 70% to 85%, and refiners near 85% to 90%. That is an editorial estimate from the same table as the US pages, not a quote. UK buyers set their own rates, so get two or three offers.

Why is the offer lower than the number on this page?

This page shows melt value, which is what the gold in the item is worth. A buyer has to test it, melt or sell it on, cover costs and make a margin, so the offer is a share of melt.

What do 375, 585, 750 and 916 on a UK hallmark mean?

They are the parts of gold per thousand: 375 is 9ct, 585 is 14ct, 750 is 18ct and 916 is 22ct. 990 and 999 are fine gold, about 24ct. A 417 stamp is 10k (10/24), the US karat.

Do I count the weight of stones?

No. Take off the weight of stones, enamel and non-gold parts, or the result will be too high. A jeweler can tell you the weight of the metal only.

What is a pennyweight?

A pennyweight (dwt) is 1.55517 grams. Twenty pennyweights make one troy ounce.

Which gold price does the calculator use?

The live gold price in US dollars per troy ounce, shown in pounds at the latest European Central Bank rate. If the live price cannot load, the page shows the last saved price and says so.
