Check the silver

A quarter dated 1964 or earlier is 90% silver and shows a solid silver edge. From 1965 the coin is clad and the edge shows a copper stripe.

Mint mark position

D and S sit on the reverse below the wreath. A 1932-D or 1932-S without a clean, original mint mark may be altered, so have any valuable-looking 1932 coin authenticated.

Cleaning and wear

Many silver quarters were cleaned or dipped. Original luster is preferred, and the first areas to wear are Washington's hair above the ear and the eagle's breast.
